A system
of translation where by the existing power sockets in the gallery
walls are directly connected to speakers amplifying the frequency
from the buildings power mains (50 Hz). Clusters of electronics and
cables are coupled in pairs with oscillators on the same frequency.
These multiple pairs are installed in the space according to a logic
determined by the existing architecture of the buildings power
outlet network. -- placement at Gertrude Contemporary, part of Feedback projected (Proposals towards an exhibition) -- ______________________________________________________________________________________________ _ ___________________x__x____________________________x__x___________________x_____________ || ### === === ### ### || || altered 9v adapter 9v adapter vcf/sweep audio || || jaycar on headphone on subwoofer generator generator || || kit speaker Exact 126 Dick Smith || || AG-2600A || || || || || || 12v adapter || || on speaker || || _____ === || || | x=== 9v adapter __________x___|| || | | on headphone speaker |_________x__x_ || |_____x### HP 4936A 9v adaptor === || || on speakers || || function ### || || generator MK2 ||__ || |___ || || 12v on Monasch University 9v adaptor Intek Electronics sub-woofer 50hz square wave gen. on speaker Lab-Pak === ### === ### _||___________x__x__________________________________________x__x_______________________________ -- --> sound recording ----------- -- placement at Nederlands Institute voor Mediakunst, part of PLATTFORM 2 -- ____________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________ || 9v adapter === x| || Wave Generator ### x| |x === 9v adapter || |x ### Monasch Univ. 50hz square wave gen. || || || || || || || || || |x === 9v adapter || |x ### Wave generator || || || || || || || || || || 9v adapter || |x === 9v adapter on sub-woofer || |x ### Altered Jaycar kit === || _||_________________________________________x___ . . . . ____||__ ________________________________________________| |________ ---- _x_ electricity plug ### oscillator at ~50hz === power adapter connected directly to a speaker |

1000 disposable earphones are spread on the floor, 960 working as speakers, 40 as microphones, making a feedback loop you can control on the mixer. There is also a fair ammount of noise coming from the amplification. The earphones working as speakers are joined in 40 groups of 24 single pieces and connected to 10 outputs of the mixer. The ones working as microphones are joined in groups of 4 and connected to 10 inputs. Each microphone is placed around a pack of 24 speakers. Most lower frequencies are muted. The dimensions, volume and sounds are different in each instance. -- exhibited as part of the following shows: Feedback projected (Proposals towards an exhibition), Gertrude Contemporary, Melbourne, AUS, 04-05.2011 The headphones show, Abrons Art Centre, NY, USA, 18.10.2008 - 09.01.2009 DNK & Axes, at TAC, Eidhoven, NL, part of Dutch Design Week, 22-24.10.2008 DNK post-digital festival, Smart Project Space, Amsterdam, NL, 14.06.2008 N-Event 22a, Tao Brewery (Scene 3), Stavanger, NO, 12.2007 -- featured in: vvork makezine gradhiva -- --> sounds 01 --> videos 01 02 -- a "reduced" version - only one pair of headphones in a feedback loop was played as a live performance at DNK-Amsterdam Open DI 5 in 2008 -- |

composer Koen Nutters. For each consecutive period of ten seconds each player has a designated on/off state. These states are generated by throwing the dice. 1-3 = on First ten seconds all players off for synching and getting ready. --AVELAS 16 Performed by the DNK Ensemble at DNK DAYS 180: Andre Avelas, Seamus Cater, Koen Nutters, Martijn Tellinga, Maia Daw, Mike Ottink, Caetano Carvalho, Andreas Busche, Roos Blogg, Viljam Nybacka, Lot Meijers, Johann Kauth, Justin Gosker, Hannah F. This work is based around the airflow of three
large scale weather balloons, more commonly used by meteorologists
and scientists to test atmospheric pressure and other
environmental conditions. In this case, these imposing and
potentially explosive objects were fitted to an automatic device
that channels air to a series of discreet musical instruments
connected by pipes. The result is a makeshift drone which
references redundant technologies as well as setting up a network
of sonic associations to do with the noises experienced in
everyday life. Inflated nightly, the weather balloons in André Avelãs Untitled, 2009, fill half of the installation space at the start of each day. Slowly releasing their internal pressure through sound-making devices the balloons deflate until they are left limp on the floor by evening. While this reading emphases the space occupied by the balloons themselves, visitors are forced to occupy the acoustic space between the balloons which expands over the course of each day and is compressed each night. -- exhibited in: solo show at IBID Projects, London, 2008 Space time signatures, at Nedelands Instite voor Mediakunst, Amsterdam, 2009 -- --> pictures IBID 01 02 03 04 05 06 --> pictures NIMk 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 09 10 11 12 13 14 --> videos: IBID & NIMk --> review -- |
